Acupuncture
For approximately
3,000 years acupuncture has been used to treat conditions, diseases and
imbalances both in the mind and body. The practice originated in China
and has evolved significantly over its long history. Originally, acupuncture
began as a part of the Taoist philosophy which practiced healing and balance
of the mind, body and spirit according to following principals of knowing
“The Way”. The promotion of longevity through the five methods
of healing was essential to sound or healthful existence. The five prongs
or elements of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) include Acupuncture,
Herbology, Dietary Therapy, Exercise and Qi Gong/Tai Chi. Their integration
into one’s daily life has been documented to increase health and
longevity and to bring one closer to a state of balance within oneself
and within the world of nature that surrounds us.
There are hundreds
of acupuncture points in the human body that are connected by what we
refer to as “meridians”. These meridians can be thought of
as rivers or streams that follow distinct pathways in the human body.
They begin very superficially and some of these channels plunge deeply
into the body to connect with other deep channels, as well as, the organs
themselves. It is these channels by means of their acupuncture points
that can be tapped or directed to facilitate healing at all levels of
the body from the most superficial layers (i.e. skin surface) to the much
deeper levels of blood and organs. It is the acupuncture treatment that
directs and influences the bodies healing and proper balance throughout
these meridian systems to promote optimum health and wellness. Also used
for this purpose is acupressure and Tuina (massage) to move the Qi (the
vital force within the body– note that Qi and blood flow together
to promote healing, wellness, overall health and vigor). During an acupuncture
treatment, ultra-thin, sterile needles are inserted into specific points
on the body. There is generally little or no discomfort during this process.
Many people (even those afraid of needles) find acupuncture so restful
they fall asleep during a treatment.
There are a wide
variety of conditions that TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) treats very
effectively both in terms of healthful benefit and cost of care. Pain
conditions are especially benefited by Acupuncture in terms of significant
pain reduction and the decreased reliance on medications such as anti-inflammatory
and pain relief medications. The “Conditions Treated” page
lists many conditions that respond well to acupuncture treatment however
this list is not exhaustive. Please consult with a practitioner to see
if acupuncture may be of benefit for your specific needs. ACTCM’s
“Links” page has some interesting information on treatable
conditions as well as State, National and International web sites to increase
acupuncture awareness. Look at “Legislative Initiatives” for
information that may help support acupuncture’s mainstream into
the US health care (which includes insurance co-payment and payment initiatives
for individuals. Also, look at ACTCM’s “FAQ” page for
general information.
